On Topic: Nobody, I am sorry you and your wife are having such a difficult time getting your first house. This is really a bad time in the market for first-time buyers across the country it seems and CA real estate isn't exactly in its prime, either.
Anyone I know currently buying or trying to buy (other than real estate investors) either find it difficult getting a loan in the first place or the property is:
a.) overpriced - either in asking price or additional fees, taxes and costs
b.) too good to be true (buyer offering well below market price, all closing costs paid, etc because they just want to get rid of the thing)
Good luck to you if you keep trying though!

It's just frustrating is all, find a place that we like and they thrown shit on top of the loan expecting us to cave in and pay for it.
yeah....right...
Housing prices are dirt cheap for San Diego right now, we'll buy a home and in 5 years after I've gotten promoted and worked up we'll buy a nice place.
Just need to find a decent place in the forst of shithole forclosures. I can't even begin to count the homes that we've walked into where people have ripped out all the light fixtures, medicine cabinets, countertops...etc just because they were losing their house and wanted to get something out of it.

I've heard that as well. I have a client that buys properties like that for dirt cheap, often from the banks that foreclosed on them and he says some of them are a real mess. It's sad...
But good for you for not caving in on those prices. You know what you want so with a little patience, hopefully you'll find it soon. Do you have orders that will keep you in San Diego for a while?
Not that you can't move even if you buy a place but it's nice if you know you're gonna be there a few years, at least.
I miss it sometimes but since we left San Diego we got a 2,600+ sq. ft. home for the same price of our teeny apartment out there- and we have a huge yard- woot!
But I miss the beach.
