The down side of the pepper spray incident was that a camera crew from the CBC got pepper sprayed. Once you directly hit the media like that, you can expect some pretty negative commentary. And indeed, the RCMP had a black eye for a few years after that incident insofar as the CBC was concerned. Why is that relevant? Because in a democracy, you kinda sorta want to stay on the good side of the media since they do strongly influence public opinion.
