Simo, try running a program called MemTest as one of your sticks of ram maybe bad.
Try reinstalling new video cards drivers or if you think this problem started after installing new drivers then revert to old ones.
If this is Vista then try disabling all programs (especially you virus and spyware scanner) prior to running the game. See if the game will run afterwards.
You could also reinstall the OS from scratch which will take a considerable amount of time but a fresh OS with TF2 creating problem almost assuredly points to a hardware problem.
My guess is bad ram or worse (motherboard) but try these options first. If you have any additional question then feel free to post them or add me as a friend and I will help you out.

I had the same problem about a week ago, dude. I'm not sure if you've tried it already, but I had to uninstall (you reformatted, so that's pretty much the same thing) and unattach/reattach my video card. For some reason, I guess the connection was faulty. Give it a whirl, if you haven't. It's a long-shot, but no TF 2 would probably feel just as bad as being diagnosed with AIDS.

Given the thread is about 3 months old, the original poster probably doesn't care.

Simo Wrote:Up until now I have recently been able to play TF2 for about a year with no problems whatsoever. Now when I start the game it brings me to the main menu and just freezes there, sometimes even the blue screen of death. No option buttons are displayed, just the background art. I cannot even ctl alt del out of it, I have to manually shut down my laptop each time. Counter Strike Source and non source also freezes up. I've tried running them all in -dxlevel 80/81 using -novid and +mat_forcehardwaresync. Nothing works. I've installed about 20 different drivers, ran driver sweeping software, ran RAM stick tests, installed new BIOS, new chipset drivers, upgraded to SP1, cleaned out the dust from my vents, reformatted my hdd, and about a hundred other things that dont come to mind right now.
Over the past 4 days I seriously have spent about 20 hours reading forum posts about this issue.
Good news is that this failure with nvidia cards and windows vista is somewhat common. Seriously, just google "nvlddmkm.sys" or "0x00000116"
From the novels of text that I read there are many causes to this problem and many supposed solutions to it. I'm really at my wits end here. Very depressed I can't play games anymore.

It's been fun sourceop.
